Dermot has served as Chair on the boards of St. Peter’s Hospital, Hamilton Public Library, Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and a Trustee for the Hamilton Board of education. He was founder and former President of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association and a former president of the Hamilton Law Association and the Hamilton Medical Legal Society.
He was instrumental in the establishment of the Lawyer’s Legacy for Children, an endowment fund for the Hamilton Community Foundation. He was a part of the philanthropic concept known as “the Lawyer’s Show” a fundraising event with the actors being from the Law Society; they have been emulated across North America by other law associations.
Dermot was awarded the Emilius Irving Award which is the most prestigious award given by the Hamilton Law Association for his service for his profession and his community. Dermot was also inducted into the McMaster University ‘s Alumni Gallery of Distinction.
