Robert (Rob) McGowan is an extremely engaged individual who has demonstrated his commitment to the Hamilton community through many years of volunteering and philanthropy.
Rob’s family immigrated to Canada from Ireland in the late 1870s.
McGowan Insulation Ltd. was started by Rob and his brother Michael and is now run by Rob and his son.
Rob is a member of the Diocese of Hamilton Catholic Board, a volunteer at the Wesley Centre where he serves meals to the Wesley guests and Good Shepherd Centres, and a supporter of Theatre Aquarius, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Hamilton Food Share, the Virtual YMCA, and many other local charities.
He is an active member of the Tamahaac Club and recently introduced the game of croquet to the club membership – providing instruction, demonstrations and assisting in the preparation of their courts.
The most important things in Rob’s life are faith, family, friends, and community. He is the epitome of what it means to be a good and caring father, grandfather, husband, brother, uncle, son-in-law, neighbour, parishioner, community member, and friend. Because Rob is a humble man, who does things without fanfare, most people are unaware of the many contributions and commitments he makes.
Rob is always supporting local not-for-profit and charity events, and he has been a significant donor and supporter of the Rotary Club of Hamilton AM for many years – personally donating thousands of dollars to the club’s major projects (anonymously). In 2012 Rob was honoured with a Paul Harris Fellowship from the Rotary Club of Hamilton AM for his considerable community involvement, volunteerism, and philanthropy.
The Order of St. Gregory the Great is an Order of Knighthood bestowed by the authority of the Pope. It is a significant honour bestowed in recognition of personal service to the Roman Catholic Church, through unusual labours, support of the Holy See, and excellent examples set forth by recipients in their communities and their countries. Pope Francis bestowed this honour on Rob McGowan four years ago.
Over the years Rob has donated his time coaching minor hockey, children’s soccer and with Sparta Soccer Club.
